Brutalist Asia is the first major survey of Brutalist architecture across the entire Asian continent. Spanning twenty-eight countries, from Japan to Lebanon, the book combines architectural history, photography and regional scholarship to explore how architects across Asia reinterpreted the architectural language of Brutalism in response to local climates, materials, cultures and political conditions.

Rather than presenting Brutalism as a single international style, this richly documented volume reveals an extraordinary diversity of architectural expression. It brings together celebrated landmarks, such as Le Corbusier's Palace of Assembly in Chandigarh, Kenzo Tange's Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo and Khalil Khoury's Interdesign Building in Beirut, with many important but little-known works that have rarely appeared in print.

Eight original essays by architects, historians and researchers explore the architectural histories of Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, India, Iran and Lebanon. Together with more than 150 photographs, they provide an authoritative account of Brutalist architecture across Asia.

Bob Pang is a practising London-based architect whose research focuses on Hong Kong’s architectural heritage. Recognition for his work includes awards from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, American Institute of Architects (HK Chapter) and Dezeen. He is the author of Unknown Brutalism: Architecture in Hong Kong (2023) and our Brutalist Hong Kong Map (2024).
