Brutalist London

Brutalist London is the second title in Blue Crow Media’s architectural guidebook series exploring Brutalist and concrete architecture. Written by Owen Hopkins and photographed by Nigel Green, the book documents more than fifty buildings across the city and situates London’s post-war architecture within its social, political and cultural context.

From landmark projects such as the Barbican Estate and National Theatre to lesser-known housing, churches and civic buildings, Brutalist London examines how architecture gave form to the ambitions of post-war reconstruction. Hopkins’s text and Green’s photography combine to provide a clear and visually rich account of Brutalist architecture in London and its enduring influence on the city.

Printed on premium uncoated paper, the book is both a reference and a guide for exploring London’s architecture in person.

This volume follows Brutalist Berlin and continues Blue Crow Media’s series of architectural guide books. It also serves as a companion to the best-selling Brutalist London Map, first published in 2016.

Owen Hopkins is an architectural writer, curator and historian. He is Director of the Farrell Centre at Newcastle University and was previously Senior Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Sir John Soane’s Museum in London.

Dr Nigel Green is a photographer based in London. His work focuses on architecture and the built environment, with a particular interest in post-war buildings.
