Concrete New York is a comprehensive guide to the city’s Brutalist and concrete architecture, documenting more than fifty buildings across the five boroughs through original photography by Jason R. Woods and insightful text by Allison C. Meier. Spanning the experimental postwar decades through to the present, it explores how concrete transformed New York’s architectural landscape.

The selection brings together internationally recognised landmarks—including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, TWA Flight Center, MetLife Building and Marcel Breuer’s former Whitney Museum—with lesser-known but equally compelling works such as the Church of the Crucifixion, Bronx Community College, Stephen Wise Towers Playground Horses, the Spring Street Salt Shed and Battery Harris at Fort Tilden. Housing, museums, churches, libraries, infrastructure, universities and public spaces are considered alongside contemporary buildings by Studio Gang, David Adjaye, Steven Holl and others, revealing the remarkable breadth of New York’s concrete architecture.

Printed on premium uncoated paper, the book is both a reference and a guide for exploring New York City’s architecture in person.

This volume follows Brutalist Berlin and Brutalist London, continuing Blue Crow Media’s series of architectural guide books. It also serves as a companion to our Concrete New York Map.

Allison C. Meier is an architectural writer based in Brooklyn and Jason R. Woods is an architectural photographer based in Michigan.
